Why can some people just wake up one day and decide to change their lives?

Why can people wake up one day and just quit smoking, or quit drinking, or stop eating sweets or processed food?

Why do some people struggle with forming habits that actually make them happy?
They know they make them happier, but they still struggle doing them.

Why do so many of us know what to do, but we just aren’t making the changes in our lives?

We know what to do but we just aren’t doing it.

How do we actually change?

These questions drive me a little bit crazy. I am obsessed with trying to understand this. I think we all ask ourselves a variation of these questions in some capacity, maybe even every day. These questions led me on a quest, and that quest led me to Gretchen Rubin, the best-selling author, wife and mother of two.

I knew Gretchen already from her previous books; I read The Happiness Project years ago and I thought it was amazing. So when she came out with her newest book Better Than Before, I picked it up for myself.

I read Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives and I became a woman obsessed.

I chased Gretchen down. I said, “Oh, I know you’re on every television channel in the world. I know you’re at the top of iTunes with your own podcast. I know that you are in extreme demand right now by every media outlet known to man, but could you maybe come talk to us? Because I believe you can change everybody’s lives who listens to this show that we do together.”

And guess what? Gretchen didn’t hesitate, and she said yes.

    Hi, Ella! This is Priscila, from Brazil. I’m 32 years-old and I love your podcast. It’s been lovely to follow someone who’s so positive about life goals. About my habbits… One habbit I’m trying to break is trichotillomania. Have you ever heard of it? It’s an an impulse, a compulsive urge to pull out one’s hair, leading to noticeable hair loss. I’ve developed it when I was a teenager and used to be very anxious. Now I feel much more calm but I can’t seem to get rid of this bad habbit as much as I try. My hair is very thin nowadays and I don’t want to get bald. When it comes to new habbits I’m tryinf to create, perhaps the most important is to turn off the internet. I love to read, to sew ans to play the piano but I hardly ever do those things because I’m always on the internet on pinterest or watching something on netflix. I keep adding interesting sewing and craft projects on my pinterest but I never get to work on them becaus e I’m waste a lot of time on the internet, on things that are not really important for my life, they won’t make me feel better about myself, I don’t get the feeling of accomplishment that I would if I was working on the projects I’ve planned to do.
